What is the LOOCS?

The Lincoln Ostomy Output Consistency Scale (LOOCS) measures the consistency of ostomy output for both clinical research and self-monitoring. It is suitable for people with a jejunostomy, ileostomy or colostomy.

The scale was developed by Lisa A. Whisenhunt, Linda H. Xu, Fan Yang and Jacques Izard from the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Internal Medicine, at the Frederick F. Paustian IBD Center, University of Nebraska Medical Center.

The scale uses nine categories, ranging from (A) Separated Formed to (I) Clear Liquid.

How can I use the scale with The Ostomate Journal?

Using the Lincoln Ostomy Output Consistency Scale, select the letter that best matches your stoma output. Record the letter and description in the stoma consistency section of The Ostomate Journal.

Over time, you’ll be able to identify how different foods affect your output and better understand how your body responds.
